Visitor Visas

Visiting Canada

Visitors to Canada may need a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), depending on their nationality and how they travel. We help you understand what applies and how to present a clear application.

A visitor visa allows a temporary stay in Canada for purposes such as tourism, visiting family and friends, or attending short events or meetings. Officers look at your reasons for travelling, your ties to your home country and your ability to support yourself during the trip.

We help you understand which travel document you need and which supporting documents can make your application easier to assess.

Who this may be relevant for

  • People visiting family or friends in Canada
  • Tourists planning a trip to Canada
  • Business visitors attending meetings or conferences
  • Canadians or residents inviting relatives to visit

Important considerations

  • A visitor visa does not guarantee entry. A border officer decides whether you may enter when you arrive.
  • You need to show that you intend to leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.
  • Visitors cannot work or study in Canada without the correct permit.
  • An invitation letter can help but does not guarantee approval.

The process

How it typically works

Every situation is different, but most applications move through these general stages.

Check what you need

Confirm whether you need a visitor visa or an eTA based on your nationality and travel method.

Gather documents

Collect your passport, a clear travel purpose, travel history, proof of funds and any invitation letter.

Submit your application

Apply online or on paper as applicable and complete biometrics if required.

Prepare to travel

Wait for the decision and keep your supporting documents ready for your arrival in Canada.

Please note: Eligibility depends on each applicant’s circumstances and current immigration requirements. Invoke Immigration cannot guarantee any immigration outcome; decisions are made by the Government of Canada.
